Glendale Beautiful blooms Arbor Day celebration
Glendale Beautiful has encouraged the planting of trees or shrubs
in Glendale for 55 years through its annual Arbor Day celebration.
A reception and program honoring those who purchase trees in honor
of a friend or family member will be on March 1 at the Casa Adobe de
San Rafael, 1330 Dorothy Drive, Glendale. A reception with coffee
begins at 10 a.m. followed by the program at 10:30.
In case of rain, the event will be in the lower level of the
Glendale Civic Auditorium, 1401 N. Verdugo Road.
During the program, third-graders from Balboa School will present
songs or poetry on the theme of nature. City Manager James Starbird
has been invited to attend and he will receive the Tree City U.S.A.
Award. This is the 20th year in a row the city has received this
award. William McKinley, arborist with the city of Glendale, is the
speaker.
Community individuals and groups will be presented with
certificates in appreciation for contributing funds to the purchase
of trees. The program is sponsored by Glendale Beautiful in
cooperation with the City of Glendale, Parks, Recreation and
Community Services Division.
More than 6,000 trees have been planted since the program began.
Trees donated by the community are used to landscape city parks,
library areas, schools and parkways of city streets.
To order a tree or for more information, call Gladys Wymore, Arbor
Day chairwoman, at (818) 246-3634.
Armenian disabled benefit from brunch
Pyunic, the Armenian Assn. for the Disabled, will have its Annual
Winter Brunch and Silent Auction from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 27 at
the Brandview Collection in Glendale.
The event will raise funds to help programs for the disabled in
Armenia including the Early Intervention Program, a summer camp at
Lake Sevan, computer workshops and training athletes for
international athletic competition.
There are more than 100,000 disabled individuals in Armenia. This
event will help the organization provide services, training and
equipment as well as create more public awareness, said Sarkis
Ghazarian, Pyunic president.
The silent auction will offer paintings, rugs, arts and crafts and
jewelry made in Armenia, as well as art donated from Southern
California artists, including Vahe Berberian, Anahid Boghosian and
Shahe Boyadjian.
Pyunic will also honor two of its disabled athletes, Marine
Hakobyan (paraplegic) and Greta Khndzrtsyan (double amputee),
competing in the 20th running of the Los Angeles City Marathon on
March 6. Both athletes suffered injuries in the devastating 1988
earthquake in Armenia that left more than 25,000 dead and hundreds of
thousands injured and homeless.
The Brandview Collection is at 109 E. Harvard St., Glendale.
Tickets are $40. For reservations, call Lorig Sivazlian at (818)
517-1208.
