Student Play Closes Caltech Theater Season

“Sonne,” an original play written by Caltech senior Nicholas Rupprecht, will close the 2004-2005 season of Theater Arts at the California Institute of Technology (TACIT) over Memorial Day weekend. A dark and bloody tale of faith, domination, and the price of cowardice, Sonne is also directed by Rupprecht.
The play relates the experience of two men, friends since college, who are hiking when they stumble into a blasted landscape long untouched by sunshine. The native inhabitants revere the absent sun as a god, and welcome the strangers as ones who “bring knowledge of the Sun.” Both men find themselves tempted to remain in this land, but for radically different reasons.
“Sonne” will be performed as a workshop production. A discussion with the author and cast members will follow each performance. Due to adult language and themes, the play is not recommended for children under 15.
Rupprecht, who will receive his bachelor of science degree in mathematics from the institute next month, has written several plays and screenplays while studying at Caltech.
His roles in nine TACIT productions include that of Angelo in “Measure for Measure” and Philinte in “The Misanthrope.” He begins graduate studies at the University of Michigan in the fall.
Veterans will be admitted without charge to the final performance - a 2 p.m. matinee on Memorial Day.
Showtimes are 8 p.m. May 27; 7 p.m. May 28; and 2 p.m. May 29 and 30.
