Meetings need volunteer support

ptaAs part of the Glendale Centennial Celebration this year, the city of Glendale invites all residents and PTA members to take part in a series of community meetings where they will help design our community’s future.

Join the mayor, City Council members and staff, and your friends and neighbors in planning the new budget. Those attending the meetings will be provided with a list of city services and will voice their opinions on how to allocate funds to maintain them over the next 10 years.

Refreshments and child care will be provided, and all participants will receive the first official Glendale city map, which will include coupons for discounts from local merchants. For more information, call (818) 548-2717 or visit www.ci.glendale.ca.us.

HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL

Susan Yee, PTSA president, invites everyone to the PTSA’s Founders Day celebration at 7 p.m. Feb. 15 in Room 401. The three founders of the National PTA will be remembered. Awards will be presented to community members who have given outstanding service to children and youth, and past PTSA presidents and award recipients will celebrate the PTA legacy, all in a relaxing Hawaiian luau setting.

Hoover High School invites all students and their parents from secondary and elementary schools to attend a presentation on college admissions by Mark Corkery, president of the National Institute of Educational Progress. This seminar will focus on how to target the right college for your student, how to research colleges, and how to make the most out of your extracurricular and volunteer experiences. Join the Hoover folks at 7 p.m. Feb. 16 in the Hoover auditorium. Yee thanks all the Hoover students who participated in the National PTA Reflections Arts program. They had several students who went on to place at the advanced levels of competition. TOLL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Julie Zastrow, PTA president, invites all students and their parents to attend a special presentation on college admissions by Mark Corkery, president of the National Institute of Educational Progress. BALBOA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Lisa Deyell, PTA president, announces that on Feb. 10 is the “Everybody Loves Reading!” event. Members of the community come to read to the children and explain how important reading is to their daily lives. All are invited to the annual Founder’s Day Celebration at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 16 in the auditorium. The honorary service awards will be presented. FRANKLIN

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The Franklin family PTA is gearing up for a week of Scholastic Book Fair.

Board member, Ibet Acevedo, has planned a Franklin Family Fun night to kick off the Book Fair at the next PTA meeting at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in the auditorium. This year’s theme is “Camp-Read-A-Book.”

All children are encouraged to come in PJs and bring their pillows and blankets. Teacher specialist, Steve Williams, has arranged the Disney VoluntEars to come and read. Refreshments will be served. JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Everyone is invited to attend PTA meetings, which are on the last Thursday of every month. The board meeting takes place at 6 p.m. followed by the general meeting at 7 p.m. Join PTA today.

KEPPEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

PTA president Joan Zierhut said that Mark Keppel’s Unity Garden had its groundbreaking ceremony on Jan 17. Zierhut wishes to thank the School Board members for their help, including Pam Ellis, Chuck Sambar, Joylene Wagner, Mary Boger, Greg Krikorian and Bill Card of the district’s public information office.

She would also like to thank Alice Petrossian, the Glendale Unified School District’s assistant superintendent for education services, Ara Najarian from the Glendale City Council and Tom Brady from the city of Glendale’s Integrated Waste Management, who also donated a composter for the garden. Thank you to all who came and for all of the support. Everyone is excited to have a vegetable garden to learn and explore in. Carla Nino, the California State PTA immediate past president, came to Keppel and showed everyone the importance and strength in diversity. Everyone is trying hard at Keppel to build a stronger and more unified community. Nino started the momentum. She was amazing and her speech was well received. The Mother/Son Round-up dinner was fun and the food was tasty. Many thanks go out to Marianna Clarizio and Adrine Novshadyan for coordinating this event.
