Alvin Ailey Dance Company Comes to Dorothy Chandler

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will return for its fourth Music Center engagement February 22 through 26 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The program is part of the third season of Dance at the Music Center. This engagement, with three separate programs, will include the West Coast premieres of two new works, “Reminiscin,” choreographed by Judith Jamison and “Ife/My Heart,” choreographed by Ronald K Brown.

The season’s repertory also includes: “Love Stories” choreographed by Judith Jamison with Robert Battle and Rennie Harris, “Shining Star” choreographed by David Parsons, “Night Creature” choreographed by Alvin Ailey, “Solo” choreographed by Hans van Manen, “Vespers” choreographed by Ulysses Dove, “Caught” choreographed by David Parsons and “Revelations” choreographed by Alvin Ailey.

The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Young Men’s Hebrew Association in New York. Led by Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance. The Ailey company has gone on to perform for an estimated 21 million people in 50 states and in 71 countries on six continents, including two historic residencies in South Africa. The company has earned a reputation as one of the most acclaimed international ambassadors of American culture, promoting the uniqueness of he African-American cultural experience and the preservation and enrichment of the American modern dance heritage.
