Remembering an ‘icon’

NORTHEAST GLENDALE ? Leo Nedeff understood what volunteering for youth soccer was all about.
It was about giving back to the community. It was about strengthening a community. It was about building for the future.
That’s why Nedeff was a volunteer coach, referee, administrator and mentor for AYSO Region 88 for 28 years.
Since Nedeff succumbed to mesothelioma on July 11, 2004 at the age of 72, his family and friends have tried to carry on his passion for youth soccer.
AYSO Region 88, which serves Glendale and La Crescenta, hosted the second annual Leo Nedeff Memorial Tournament at the Glendale Sports Complex and Glendale Community College on Saturday and Sunday in honor of the “Super Volunteer.”
“It’s amazing how many people came out here because of Leo,” said Frank Bagheri, the tournament’s director.
Nedeff’s son, Jordan, 36, officiated matches and coached his Glendale United soccer team while his mother, Carole, watched.
“This is a wonderful tribute to the 28 years my husband gave to this community,” Carole Nedeff said. “I feel like he’s on this field every time I go to the Sports Complex.
“Jordan and I are trying to do what he did.”
Aldo Mascheroni, who is the commissioner of AYSO Region 88, said Leo Nedeff was an icon in the soccer community. Through the tournament, Mascheroni said he hoped that others would realize they’re able to make a difference, too.
“He was the most dedicated volunteer,” Mascheroni said. “AYSO is not just about playing the game. It’s about learning what you can do to make a difference.”
Jordan Nedeff said his dad understood the cause of AYSO.
“This is the greatest thing,” Jordan Nedeff said. “We’re here and this is all about him.”
