Superman makes a super return

The summer is here and if you need a break from the heat, head to the theater for “Superman Returns,” a wonderful new look at an old classic.

This is not a remake. The film essentially picks up where 1980s “Superman II” left off and this creates a unique story involving Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) and Superman. The filmmakers completely ignore the 1983 film that co-starred Richard Pryor. Some things are best left forgotten.

Newcomer Brandon Routh is the new Superman and he does an excellent job taking over for the late Christopher Reeve. There is a remarkable resemblance between Routh and Reeve and this adds to the beauty of the experience. Kate Bosworth plays Lois Lane, a definite upgrade over Margot Kidder.

One of my favorite memories as a child was having my parents take me to see the original “Superman” in 1978. I believe that film is one of the best fantasy movies ever made. I was very eager to see this new version and the director, Bryan Singer, doesn’t disappoint. Singer adds many subtle tributes to the original while putting his own spin on this new production.

I don’t want to give away the story but as you can guess, it’s good versus evil, but this is not a cheesy action film. There are many plot twists that will leave Superman fans discussing this project for days.

“Superman Returns” looks and sounds fantastic. Hearing John Williams’ original score blast through the theater is breathtaking. My advice, spend the extra cash and go to the nicest theater in your area. You won’t be disappointed.

“Superman Returns” makes a great date movie. It has action for the guys and romance for the ladies. I took my friend, John, who is a professional screenwriter. We both thought the script was well written. Most of the dialogue is very witty and the supporting cast puts a nice spin on the tone of the material.

In all honesty, this is a popcorn movie and you must enter the Mega-Plex ready to be entertained. Purchase a large popcorn, because the film lasts 154 minutes but it doesn’t feel that long.

Everyone will have a different opinion about “Superman Returns.” I enjoyed it. The world needs Superman and I hope the “Man of Steel” returns in the summer of 2009 to save us once again from ourselves.
