Six Local Students Selected for Girl Scout Travel Troop

Six La Crescenta residents are among 14 area girls selected for an elite Girl Scout troop that will travel to Savannah, Georgia, in the summer of 2008.

Sponsored by Girl Scouts-Mt. Wilson Vista Council, the Savannah Travel Troop will visit Savannah after 18 months of planning and fundraising through a variety of activities. Their itinerary will include a visit to the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts of the USA.

Girl Scout troops travel from across the United States year-round to take part in programs and learn more about the organization’s remarkable founder. Located in the heart of the Savannah historic district, “the birthplace” as it is commonly called by Girl Scouts nationwide, was the city’s first national historic landmark.

The travel troop selection process included a written application and personal interviews. The girls were selected on the basis of their experience in and commitment to Girl Scouting.

The six girls from La Crescenta are:

  • Kelly Brundige, 13, a ninth grader at Immaculate Heart Middle School and the daughter of Patti Brundige, one of the two adult Girl Scout leaders for the Savannah Travel Troop. In her ninth year of Girl Scouting, Kelly also enjoys cross-country, soccer, field hockey and Junior Religious Activity Council.
  • Dana Chernich, 13, an eighth grader at Rosemont Middle School and the daughter of Gale Chernich. In her eighth year of Girl Scouting, Dana enjoys camping, community service and meeting other girls.
  • Claire Cutler, 13, an eighth grader at Immaculate Heart Middle School and the daughter of Chip Cutler and Becky Sanderson. In her eighth year of Girl Scouting, Claire enjoys dancing and soccer, and she “absolutely loves” Girl Scouting because she can have fun while doing helpful things.
  • Kaitlyn Ireland, 14, an eighth grader at Rosemont Middle School and the daughter of Lisa and Gary Ireland. Active in Girl Scouting for five years, Kaitlyn says Girl Scouting challenges her to work hard to achieve her goals.
  • Rebecca Tjoelker, 14, an eighth grader at Rosemont Middle School and the daughter of Delinda and Bob Tjoelker. In her eighth year of Girl Scouting, Rebecca considers herself a responsible leader who knows how to cooperate with others.
  • Samantha Boller, 14, an eighth grader at Rosemont Middle School and the daughter of Samantha and Scott Boller. In her seventh year of Girl Scouting, Samantha is an experienced traveler who believes Girl Scouting has helped her become a better person.
  • Girl Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council serves more than 9,000 girls and young women, ages five to 17, in 23 San Gabriel Valley communities.
