Of the more than six hundred students that graduated Crescenta Valley High School last week only one holds the title of perfect attendance, Amanda Del Rio.
“She has had perfect attendance in her four years at high school,” said Mark Rubio, assistant principal at CVHS.
Perfect attendance means that out of the four years, which breaks down to 720 days or 3,840 hours, Del Rio missed — zero.
“It was really difficult,” Del Rio said. “My friends think I’m crazy.”
Del Rio admitted that getting up every morning for school wasn’t that easy and there were times that she didn’t feel great but went to school anyway.
“I think it shows drive and dedication,” Rubio said.
Del Rio decided to make this four-year goal after attending a CVHS 1998 commencement award ceremony for her older sister.
“I saw two people stand up for perfect attendance,” she said.
“I thought, I could do that,” she said, and set the goal. According to her parents, she would have had perfect attendance at Rosemont Middle School as well if not for them taking her out of class an hour early on the last day of school in eighth grade.
Del Rio has had to make some sacrifices including saying no to going out with friends that ask her to skip a day, like the traditional senior ditch day.
“I was the only senior in all of my classes on senior ditch day,” Del Rio said. She stayed focused on her goal. “I am proud of myself.”
Del Rio carries that same dedication to her job at the Church of the Lighted Window Preschool.
“I’ve been here since September. I love it. I want to be a preschool teacher,” she said.
Del Rio plans to dedicate herself to teaching young children. She said that it is important to teach young children and give them a strong foundation at a preschool level.
She plans to attend Glendale Community College in the fall and then transfer to Cal State. Del Rio believes that goal setting is important.
“If you have something [a goal] in mind, go for it,” Del Rio said.
