NEW SKILLS PROGRAM FOR DEAF STUDENTS ON TAP

A grant program that is designed to improve basic skills for Glendale Community College deaf students will begin this fall semester. Deaf students will take writing, reading and grammar classes, as well as American Sign Language (ASL) courses. The ASL courses are for students who are fluent in sign language, but will teach the rules of the language much the same way English speakers take English courses to learn grammar and punctuation.

What students are learning in the English classes will correspond with what they learn in the ASL classes. Math classes will also be part of the program, which will help deaf students prepare for higher-level courses and transfer to universities such as CSUN, which has an extensive deaf studies curriculum and has one of the largest deaf student populations of any university in the nation.

The college’s innovative program will include more disciplines as the students progress, streaming Web video for the math and English classes and close-captioned Web support. Faculty in all of the new classes will be fluent in English and ASL. For more information, contact counselor Mary Elizabeth Barrett at 818-240-1000, ext 5351 or at ebarrett@glendale.edu.

SUMMER EXHIBIT CONTINUES IN THE COLLEGE GALLERY

The art exhibition “Summer Show: Carlos Mollura, Chris Nichols,” continues in the Glendale Community College Art Gallery through Aug. 10. Both artists are locally based. Specifically for this exhibition, Mollura has made a tri-colored, partially transparent, inflated plastic sculpture that extends from one of the skylights of the gallery to the floor.

It is inspired by Neopolitan ice cream and by light and space. Nichols is exhibiting assemblages, sculptures made by combining found objects. The components of the sculptures have been unearthed by Nichols in his many walks around Eagle Rock.

Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Call 818-240-1000, ext. 5663 for information or visit the web site at www.glendale.edu/ artgallery.

The gallery is located in the college’s Library Building, 1500 N. Verdugo Rd., Glendale.
