Locals start off slow in tourney

GLENDALE — If there’s any hoping of improving their respective games, then four local athletes will need to do so quickly.

Three boys’ and one girls’ golfer didn’t generate the type of results they expected Tuesday afternoon during the first round of the TomatoBank Southern California Classic at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont.

Now, they are forced to turn in better efforts today in an attempt to make the cut for Thursday’s final round in an event conducted by the American Junior Golf Assn.

Marco Fortades, Justin Yu and Hasan Doxey are among the area athletes competing in the Boys’ Division, while Glendale resident Sarah Salvo is participating in the Girls’ Division.

Salvo, a senior at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, finished with a seven-over-par 72 on the 6,079-yard course to place her in a four-way tie for 24th.

She had one birdie, 10 pars, six bogeys and one double-bogey.

“I don’t know if I liked anything about my game,” said Salvo, who helped Notre Dame win the Mission League title last fall. “I have to try to not blow up that bad again and make the cut by making some birdie putts.”

Fortades, a Glendale resident, is in a seven-way tie for 68th after carding a nine-over-par 81 on the 6,894-yard course. Fortades had one birdie, seven pars and 10 bogeys.

Yu, who helped Crescenta Valley High’s boys’ golf team win its third straight Pacific League championship in early May, carded an 84 to place himself in a five-way tie for 82nd. Yu, who is the league’s reigning individual champion, had 12 pars, three bogeys, one double-bogey, one triple-bogey and one quadruple-bogey.

“I just had a really bad day,” Yu said. “Every time I hit the ball, it landed in the rough that was pretty thick.

“I had a hard time putting my shots on the greens. Nothing is going well. I lost three balls, including one in a water hazard. I have to try my best to improve my game.”

Doxey, a senior at Flintridge Prep, registered an 85 to put him in a three-way tie for 87th with Bogart Strauss and Robert Garske. He had three birdies, seven pars, two bogeys, five double-bogeys and one quadruple-bogey.
