Youths offer it up orchestrally

The Glendale Youth Orchestra will present the first concert of its 19th season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale.

Violinist Erica Richardson will be playing the Bizet-Sarasate Carmen Fantasy. The orchestra will perform Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D. Major. Tickets are $9.50 and may be purchased from the Alex Theatre box office.

Musicians present a vocal feast

The Vocal Music Department at Crescenta Valley High School presents “A Feast of Lights” at 7 p.m. Thursday in the school’s MacDonald Auditorium, 4400 Ramsdell Ave., La Crescenta.

Tickets are $8 at the door for adults and $5 for students. The concert will continue on Nov. 30.

Talk to discuss history of jazz

Jazz historian and L.A. Jazz Scene journalist John R. Tumpak will present a lecture titled “A Tribute to Duke Ellington” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Brand Library Recital Hall, 1601 W. Mountain St., Glendale.

Tumpak will also show a movie and TV clips of Ellington’s performances. Admission is free.

Alex Theatre to host classic ballet

Los Angeles Ballet will present a full-length original production of “The Nutcracker” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Alex Theatre, 216 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale.

Guest artist Rainer Krenstetter, soloist with Staatsballett Berlin, will dance the lead role of the Prince Cavalier at select shows.
