GLENDALE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING PREVIEW

Share

ON THE AGENDA

The following items will be considered at today’s Glendale Unified School District Board of Education meeting:

?

School district staff members will present the school board with information on the racial and ethnic composition of the students in the school district this year.

The school district is required by the state to conduct a racial/ethnic census of students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The survey information comes from what parents state as their children’s ethnicity when they enroll their children in school. Parents are permitted to decline to state their children’s ethnicity.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The school board will be updated on the changes in the sizes of various racial and ethnic groups in the school district since last year.

The board is not expected to take any action on this topic at tonight’s meeting.

The school board will discuss the City Council’s recent approval of an ordinance that will prohibit the handling of completed absentee ballot applications for municipal elections by anyone other than the voter and the City Clerk’s Office.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The school board will discuss the potential impacts of the change on future elections for seats on the board of education.

The city’s recent vote will affect school board elections only if the school district decides to consolidate its election with the City Council election. The school board makes this decision before each election cycle. The board is not expected to vote on this item at tonight’s meeting.

The school board will receive an update on the plans for the construction repair project at Crescenta Valley High School.

The school district plans to repair construction defects in four buildings at the school — two classroom buildings, the gym building and the library building. The construction defects occurred during the modernization work that was finished at the school in 2002.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The board of education will hear specifically about repairs that are expected to begin this summer for one of the affected classroom buildings, and about temporary classroom space that will be used while construction is underway.

No formal action is expected.
