YOUNG WOMEN HONORED WITH GOOD CITIZEN AWARDS

Members of the Don José Verdugo Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, honored five local young women at its annual Good Citizen Award ceremony held recently at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club.

The Good Citizen Award is presented to students annually for outstanding work they do for home, school, community and country.

The students are selected by school faculty committees based on the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

The young women, all seniors, represent five local high schools and were selected for this prestigious award. They are Lucy Boltz; Serli Nazarian; Holly Jamison; Erin Scharre; and Crystal Pack. DAR Chapter Good Citizen Chairman Barbara Rogers, presented each student with a certificate and monetary scholarship award.

Lucy, of Flintridge Prep, is the daughter of Howard and Jane Boltz. She participates in Key Club and helped start a chapter of STAND (a student-led anti-genocide coalition), at her high school to raise awareness of the genocide in Darfur. Boltz volunteers at Huntington Memorial Hospital and at the Jewish AIDS Services to cook meals at their Fairfax kitchen for those suffering from HIV or AIDS.

She helps plan and participates in home building projects with Salem Lutheran Church in Tijuana, Mexico, annually.

Holly, of La Cañada High School, is the daughter of Daryl and Laura Jamison. She is a member of the yearbook staff and is Associated Student Body senior class representative. Jamison is a member of National Charity League, and as a Girl Scout, she is working on her Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting. She is actively involved in working with Special Olympics.

Serli attends Clark Magnet High and is the daughter of Gorgen Nazarian and Armineh Hovsepian. She is a member of her school’s Engineering Club and has participated in Music Club and KATS (Kids Against Tobacco Smoking).

She has tutored each Saturday for five years at the Iranian Armenian Society of Los Angeles.

She also assists a student who is struggling with English at an elementary school.

Crystal attends Crescenta Valley High and is the daughter of Michelle and Daniel Ko.

She is the director of Cadet Operations in Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and is a member of the Kitty Hawk Air Society. She also served as color guard commander. Pack is president of the Spanish Club; treasurer of National Honor Society and Christian Fellowship; and participates in the Academy of Science and Medicine and California Scholarship Federation. Pack has helped build houses for the less fortunate in Mexico and has volunteered at the Pasadena Humane Society.

Erin is the daughter of Stephen and Lisa Sharre. She attends Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy where she is student body president. Involved in athletics for four years, she has participated in basketball and is varsity baseball captain.

She is a member of Ambassadors, Christian Action Movement, Students Against Destructive Decisions, California Scholarship Federation and the National Honor Society. She volunteers at All Saints Day Care Center and has been a member of Youth and Government for two years.

The Don José Verdugo Chapter was founded in 1953 and continues to support the community through numerous volunteer efforts.
