Area team raises money, wins tourn.

The La Crescenta Falcons 10–year-old baseball team, in preparing for their week long tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y., this summer, won the Spring Fling tournament in Huntington Beach.

The team only lost one game in pool play and won the championship game, 6-4, behind the pitching of Alex Hall and Joey McClure and catcher Kyle Currie. As a team, they had an impressive on-base percentage of over .600 for the tournament. In the final game, Andrew Gutierrez had two RBI’s and scored once and Chris Reik and Greg Stupakis stole extra base hits in the outfield with major league catches.

On Saturday, Gonzalo Rios went 6-for-6, Wyatt Ernst went 4-for-6 and Cameron Wetherby had a triple, three doubles and six singles for the tournament.

These are the same Falcons that had a dinner fundraiser last Friday, held to help the team raise money for a trip to Cooperstown, N.Y., for another tournament.

The dinner was an overwhelming success and the boys (unofficially) raised around $1,300.

LAFC U16 and U18 teams get two wins

The Los Angeles Futbol Club played last weekend and both the boys’ under-16 and under-18 clubs walked away with two solid wins each at home, La Cañada High’s soccer field.

Playing the San Diego Sur Soccer club on Saturday, the U16 team won 1-0 and the U18 club 3-1.

On Sunday, both teams faced Nomads Soccer Club. The U16 team defeated the Nomads 3-1 and the U18 club won 2-1.

The U18 club (13-1-1) has been rolling all season. Featuring a number of local players, including Gabe Ramirez and Kevin Orozco of Crescenta Valley High and Daniel Frank and Joey Franco of St. Francis, the team hasn’t lost a game since losing 0-1 to Pataedores on March 15 and have won seven of their last eight.

Their one tie came last week, when they tied Arsenal FC at Riverside, 2-2.

LAFC’s boys teams will be playing on May 10 against the Irvine Strikers at Irvine’s home, the soccer field at Concordia University, at 2:00 p.m.

LAFC’s next home game will be a rematch against Arsenal, May 17.
