Local baseball team to be formed

The La Crescenta Crush, a kid pitch 9-and-under tournament baseball team, is looking for All-Star and championship team players from the area to participate in several tournaments in Southern California in the fall.

Interested players must be 9 or younger as of April 30, 2009 and willing to travel to tournament games on the weekends once per month.

Football workshop to be held at GCC

The Fusion Football Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9 at Glendale Community College, 1500 N. Verdugo Road, Glendale.

The event is geared for quarterbacks, wide receivers and tight ends ages 11 to 18. It will offer training and tips with respect to each position and will be conducted by former NFL players Chris Thomas and Bob Gagliano.

All participants and their parents will be required to sign a liability waiver at registration in order to participate.

The cost is $200 per person.

Registration will run from 8 to 9 a.m. Lunch will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Registration and payment will be due the day of the camp.

Make checks payable to Gagliano for quarterbacks and Thomas for wide receivers and tight ends.

Fitness Club for Kids program

The La Crescenta-based Fitness Club for Kids program will offer fitness classes at Two Strike Park.

Senior Wellness and Walking Classes will offer adults an opportunity to participate in a low-impact workout designed to help seniors and adults get fit in a comfortable and fun environment. Classes will be offered Monday through Friday from 8 to 9 a.m.

The cost is $5 per person per class.

An innovative fitness class for parents and their children will be featured from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday. The “My Parents and Me” class will give parents an opportunity to participate in a vigorous workout and provide their children with a separate age and activity appropriate workout designed for kids of all ages.

At the end of each class, parents and kids will be brought together for a nutritional lesson, fitness game or team building activity. The cost is $10 per adult and $5 per child. Large family rates are also available.

Children age 6 through 13 can participate in “Summer Sports and Fitness Classes” at Two Strike Park from 10 a.m. to noon. Classes will include a workout designed to teach kids how to exercise in fun and engaging ways, eat healthy, and provide them with opportunities to participate in a wide range of sports and fitness activities for both boys and girls.

Classes will be taught by certified fitness trainers and student-athletes from local high school and colleges in Southern California. The cost per class is $20 per child.

Tickets for all three classes can be bought in advance from the Fitness Club for Kids and the West Coast Boot Camp Fitness Studio, 1049 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge.

Other classes include obstacle course, soccer, flag football and Olympic sports from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays through Fridays at the La Cañada Community Center.

Yoga classes, baseball, basketball and flag football is offered from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays through Friday at Two Strike Park.

Golf lessons to be given locally

Verdugo Hills Golf Course will provide golf instruction for junior (ages 5-15) golfers through Aug. 28.

Each class is three days long and will run from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays.

The cost is $60 per week and is taught by a PGA professional and his assistant. Class size is limited so that each junior gets the proper attention needed.

Additionally, a one-hour golf clinic for juniors will be held at 9 a.m. Saturdays. The cost is $10 per session and is taught by the same instructors as the summer program.

Smiley to host basketball camp

Former Crescenta Valley High boys’ basketball Coach Jim Smiley, who led the Falcons to their only outright Pacific League title, will host his annual camp July 28-Aug. 1 at Crescenta Valley High’s south gymnasium, 2900 Community Drive, La Crescenta.

The camp is open to boys and girls ages 5-14.

It will run from 8 a.m. until noon, with the cost $135 per camper. All campers will receive an evaluation, T-shirt, trophy and more.

Michelle Greco Basketball Camp

Former Crescenta Valley High and UCLA women’s basketball star Michelle Greco will hold her 10th annual basketball camp from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 4-8 at Crescenta Valley High’s gymnasium, 2900 Community Drive, La Crescenta.

The camp is designed for girls, ages 7-13. The cost is $225 per person.

Instruction, games, prizes, T-shirts and more will be featured.

Glendale High Golf Tournament

The Glendale High Golf Tournament will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Pacific Palms Resort, One Industry Hills Parkway, City of Industry. Check in will be at 11:30 a.m.

The cost is $175 per person or $700 per foursome. The price includes range balls, lunch, buffet dinner, prizes and more.

All proceeds will benefit the Glendale High School athletic program.
