A crowd estimated at 50,000 people of all ages turned out along Honolulu Avenue to enjoy a fun-filled evening of entertainment when the Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce held its 1998 Oktoberfest, chaired by Rick Dinger.

Twenty Years Ago

A spectacular blaze caused at least $200,000 in damages to a house under construction in the 2900 block of Oakmont Drive in Glendale. Several brush fires were reported to have been touched off by the original incident.

Thirty Years Ago

Olivia Hunt, a member of the Royal Academy of Dance in London and New York, opened the Olivia Hunt Dance Studio in the Montrose Boardwalk complex.

Forty Years Ago

Mrs. Edward Jahelka, president of the La Crescenta Woman’s Club Juniors, opened the first meeting of the club’s new year in the fall of 1968. She selected as her theme, “Color it Fun.”

Fifty Years Ago

On hand to officially open the headquarters of the Crescenta Valley Democratic Club on Montrose Avenue in Montrose were Herbert Childs, president; Rudd Brown, Democratic candidate for the 21st Congressional District; and Charlotte McDermid, precinct chairman. Brown’s grandfather was William Jennings Bryan, who was the party’s nominee for president in 1896, 1900 and 1908.
