A 22-year-old Rosemead man, identified as Simon Alexander Perez, was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident at about 5 p.m. on Monday on SR 2 Angeles Crest Highway and Up- per Big Tujunga Canyon Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle was traveling westbound on Upper Big Tujunga Canyon Road when it crossed into the oncoming traffic lane, crossed the left roadway edge, struck a tree and continued down a dirt embankment, coming to rest in a section of shrubs.

Perez’ friend, an unidentified 21-year-old Sun Valley man, crawled from the wreckage back to the main road and summoned help.

CHP and Montrose Search and Rescue responded to the scene as well as Los Angeles County Fire Department and paramedics.

“The car went off the road in a sideway position and hit a tree then fell off the edge,” said Mike Leum, Montrose Search and Rescue. “The whole impact was on the driver’s door. It was a severe impact.”

The road conditions at the time of the accident were good and the weather was clear. CHP continues the investigation as to the accident’s cause.
