The 100th birthday of Adelaide McNutt was celebrated Jan. 3, when approximately 140 members of her family, friends from her church, First Lutheran of Glendale, and residents of Windsor Manor gathered in South Glendale.
Family came from as far as Lake Tahoe, Santa Cruz and San Luis Obispo and as near as Eagle Rock to take part.
Many of McNutt’s family members live in the nearby communities, including Eagle Rock, Burbank and Sherman Oaks, including her three children, Gloria Hildinger, Kenneth and David McNutt, and their children and their children’s children. There are seven great-grandchildren.
The party was at Windsor Manor Retirement Community where Adelaide McNutt has lived for 14 years. She lives in her own unit in independent living and is the chairwoman of the Knitting and Crocheting circle where they make baby caps and blankets to give to Glendale Memorial Hospital.
Born in Manitoba, Canada, Adelaide McNutt first worked on the farm, then as a hairdresser in Winnipeg. In 1929, she moved to Los Angeles, took classes to get her local license and continued working as a hairdresser until her marriage in 1933.
In the 1940s, Adelaide McNutt and her husband, Ronald McNutt, ran a family restaurant on Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock for 15 years. Ronald was chef of the Martha Washington, and Adelaide McNutt was the hostess and occasional waitress.
Ronald McNutt passed away in 1991, and in a few years Adelaide McNutt moved to Windsor Manor. It’s a handy location for her because it’s near her church, where she has been a member for 65 years.
She attributes her longevity and good health to always being an easygoing person and said her children were not troublesome to raise, all turning out well.
