Family History Fair is at 9 a.m. Jan. 24

Connecting families, both locally and globally, is the primary focus of the Family History Fair hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, La Crescenta Stake, from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 24. It will be held at the Latter-day Saints Church, at 4550 Raymond Ave. in La Crescenta. The fair is free and open to the public.

The Family History Fair Keynote Speaker will be Brentnall Turley of Culver City. An attorney by profession and a graduate of UC Berkeley School of Law, Turley has a passion for personal and family history and will be sharing the fruits of that passion with the audience. He has written a 1,000-page, multi-generational family history which winds its way through England, Germany, Switzerland and Mexico.

Many engaging classes will be offered, such as basic guidelines on getting started on family history, adding multimedia elements to enhance a personal or family history, and digital photography, including tips on restoring photographs. Census indexing of the global family and a special class on Filipino Genealogy will also be given.

A highlight of the fair will be the presentation of the Family Values Award to Dr. Omar Alfi and Azmeralda Alfi of Glendale. The Alfis began the New Horizon School in Pasadena, an independent Islamic school founded by the Islamic Center of Southern California in 1984. The school is committed to providing students with an excellent academic education, firm grounding in moral and ethical values, and virtuous living in a progressive Islamic environment.

Family and personal history displays will be exhibited for the duration of the fair.
