Patsy Ruth Mentzer Bach

Pasty was born in Denning, Ark. on June 24, 1926 to Zeola and Curtis Stewart. She lived there until World War II, which brought her family out to San Pedro so her father could work in the Bethlehem Steel shipyard.

Patsy attended her last two years of school at San Pedro High School. Soon after graduating she took the “Big White Cruise Ship” to Catalina where she worked as a waitress. There she met Mike Mentzer, with whom she shared a 25 year marriage before his death in 1973. Patsy and Mike had three children: Pamela Riach of Camarillo; Michael Mentzer of Oakview; and Patrick Mentzer of Sacramento. She felt pleased that all three of her children are happily married — Pamela to Ron Riach, Mike to Betti and Patrick to Jerry Orgeron. Patsy was also very proud of her grandchildren: Hayley and Bryce Riach and Michelle Mentzer. She also has two very special neighbors that were like her own children, Scott and Nancy Jones.

Patsy was wonderfully involved in her children’s lives, making Halloween costumes, attending all school and sporting events and hosting many sleep-overs.

She delighted in having large holiday family gatherings in her home. Patsy recently joined her children, spouses and grandchildren on a vacation in Kauai.

Not only were Patsy and Mike partners in life, but in business as well. Together they owned and operated Mike’s Town and Country in Pasadena, which is now Stony Point. They sold the restaurant in 1960 and soon opened Mike’s Verdugo Room in Montrose. Mike and Patsy ran the business until Mike’s death. Patsy continued to operate Mike’s Verdugo Room with the support of her many loyal customers who referred to her as Mother Superior until she sold 1986.

Patsy was also fortunate to re-marry in 1990 to Foy Bach. Foy was a childhood friend from Arkansas whose family also moved west during the war. They were married until his death in 1998.

Patsy passed away on Feb. 1.

There will be a 1 p.m. memorial for Patsy on Feb. 21 in her La Crescenta home. Those who knew Patsy are welcomed to join in a celebration of her life.
