STUDENT SUCCESS

The Glendale Community College Board of Trustees will hear a presentation on a five-year plan for improving student success.

Peggy Renner, a history professor and coordinator of the college’s strategic master plan, will give the presentation, titled “Strategic Master Plan 2008-14: An Overview of Our Plans for Student Success,” and discuss changes in strategies that could improve the college’s transfer and student retention rates.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The board will not vote during this presentation.

?

STUDENT SERVICES LAB

Trustees will hear a report on a new student services lab building, which the college was planning before funding for the project was halted by the state.

The building is still being designed, but funding for architects was frozen during the state’s budget crisis.

The project is also dependent on future bond revenues, which officials expect to receive after voters approve a measure planned to be added to ballots in 2010.

Offices for financial aid and counseling, among other services, would be housed in the new building, which officials had conceived as a “one-stop” solution for students.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Trustees will not vote during this report.

?

BEAUTIFICATION FUND

The board will vote on the creation of a campus beautification fund to help add and develop landscaping on the college’s main campus.

Officials have succeeded in collecting $25,000 in donations to start the fund after voting unanimously to approve creation of the fund, in principal.

The board will decide on its specific purpose to make sure that it does not initiate projects that conflict with other landscaping efforts on the campus.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The board is expected to approve the campus beautification fund, with provisions so that it does not create projects that might interfere with the college’s other landscaping efforts.
