2009 GCC Athletic Hall of Fame

The eighth annual Glendale Community College Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held March 21 at the college’s J. Walter Smith Student Center, 1500 N. Verdugo Road, Glendale.

Jeff Nelson, George McGowan, Steve Moore, Dr. John Davitt, Tony Spino and the 1978 women’s volleyball team will be inducted.

Nelson was the individual state champion in cross-country in 1980, helping the squad win the team title. He held the high school record in the two-mile in eight minutes 36.3 seconds for almost 30 years until it was recently eclipsed.

McGowan and Moore were Glendale High graduates and All-American teammates on the 1967 Glendale college football team at wide receiver. McGowan went on to become a record-setting receiver in the Canadian Football League and was named the league’s most valuable player in 1973 before being placed in the league’s hall of fame in 2003.

Moore served as an assistant coach for the Seattle Seahawks for many years.

Davitt was the superintendent and president at the college from 1985-2006 with the athletic facilities improving under his watch.

Spino was a student-trainer at Glendale college from 1968-70 and has been a trainer for more than 35 years at UCLA. He was a trainer for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1975-79.

The volleyball squad, coached by Dianne Spangler, won the Western State Conference championship and finished fourth in state in 1978.

The cost is $50 per person. For more information, contact Glendale college Sports Information Director Alex Leon at (818) 240-1000, ext. 5674.
