Susan Hatfield Stanton recalled her days walking home from Toll Junior High School and Hoover High School in the late 1940s and early ‘50s. During her high school years, (she graduated in 1953) she and a friend would make sure they walked via the corner of Grandview Avenue and Kenneth Road so they could go to Person’s Drug Store on the southwest corner (where Kenneth Road Pharmacy is now, she said) and get a cherry coke at the fountain.

“My girlfriend’s boyfriend was the soda jerk there,” she said.

Susan Stanton married Gene Stanton in 1954. His father, Glenn, was a handyman who patronized several businesses at the corner of Glenoaks Boulevard and Western Avenue. He bought his tools and parts at Nadeau’s Hardware, owned by Ed Nadeau and his pharmacy supplies at Beal’s Pharmacy, owned by George Beal.

And when his shoes needed repair, he headed for Diradoorian’s Shoe Repair, owned and operated by Dee Diradoorian. In their free time, the four men bowled at Grand Central Bowling Alley at the corner of Sonora Avenue and Flower Street.
