Golden Knights sweep up Falcons

GLENDALE — Whenever the St. Francis High and Crescenta Valley boys’ golf teams get together for a nine-hole round, it’s an opportunity for both squads to digest things to help them get through the remainder of the season.

A competitive nonleague rivalry doesn’t hurt when the Golden Knights and Falcons meet twice during the season, usually at the midway point.

St. Francis completed a two-match season series sweep of the Falcons on Thursday afternoon, as the Golden Knights posted a 209-213 win at Brookside Golf Course No. 1 in Pasadena.

St. Francis (7-7) recorded a 204-213 win against Crescenta Valley (8-7) on Monday at the same venue, which also happens to be the home course for both squads.

Ideally, St. Francis Coach Jeff Durfee and Crescenta Valley Coach John Pehar would have been thrilled if their respective players could have shot better after the teams struggled Monday.

Vincent Korth of St. Francis, which finished fourth in the Mission League last season, secured medalist honors Thursday with an even-par 36.

Michael Timpson fired a 39 to lead the Falcons, who have won four consecutive Pacific League championships. Timpson, a senior, earned medalist honors Tuesday with a 38.

Bobby Coffin finished with a 41 for the Golden Knights, who got a 42 from Drake Muir and 48s from Garrett Valerio and Chris Petetio.

John Lee posted a 40 for the Falcons, who got a 43 from Jason Lee, a 44 from Nigel Alandy and a 47 from Nick Blackburn.

“We had some problems on the last couple of holes, and we had some higher scores” Pehar said. “Otherwise, we had a chance to win.

“If anything else, it will want to make our players want to practice more during spring break and before our next match. They know that they’ve got to get some practice in the next couple of weeks. If so, then they can be more competitive for the last couple of weeks of the season.”

St. Francis and Crescenta Valley finished third and fifth, respectively at the CIF Southern Section Western Team Divisional last season at Montebello Golf Course.

The Golden Knights and Falcons will once again strive to qualify for the divisional in May.
