Groundbreaking for new center

City officials on Tuesday celebrated the long-awaited groundbreaking for a new $7.92-million Adult Recreation Center.

The project was delayed for years by repeated redesigns and false starts on securing the needed funding. Tennis players also fought the planned removal of the Central Park courts to make way for the new building.

About a third of the seniors in Glendale live within the immediate area around the recreation center at 201 E. Colorado St. The new center is funded mostly by county and state grants, as well as city redevelopment and capital improvement money.
