‘Viva Fiesta’ to be celebrated by club

On May 23, the La Crescenta Woman’s Club is hosting “Viva Fiesta,” a celebration of Crescenta-Cañada Valley’s Rancho heritage, with Mexican food, dancing to live music and fun. Held at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club, the event begins with a social time at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and dancing from 7 to 10 p.m. The cost for a single ticket is $15, couples are $25. Guests are encouraged to wear their ponchos, serapes and sombreros. Comedy, music at Landers’ event

The Little Landers Historical Society presents “An Evening of Entertainment” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 23. The evening features comedy, music and more by local performers and takes place at Bolton Hall, 10110 Commerce Ave. in Tujunga.

Tickets are $10 at the door and seating is limited. Ticket sales will begin at 6:30 p.m. All funds go to support the care and upkeep of Bolton Hall Museum.

Register now for Family Fun Run

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA is again hosting its annual Fiesta Days Run. Participants can take part in a one mile Family Fun Run, 5k walk, 5k, or 10k race beginning at Descanso Gardens at 7:30 a.m. Monday morning, May 25.

Memorial Day services planned

The Montrose Shopping Park Association and Montrose-Verdugo Chamber of Commerce are hosting a Memorial Day tribute honoring veterans on May 25. The event is from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Vietnam War Memorial at the corner of Ocean View Boulevard and Honolulu Avenue.

A Memorial Day service is also being hosted by VFW Post 1614 and American Legion Post 288 at 8 a.m. at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave. at La Crescenta. Decorated Vietnam Veteran and local businessman Sonny Sardo will be the guest speaker. Coffee and pastries will be served at VFW Post 1614 at 2937 Honolulu Ave. following the service, which is expected to last approximately 30 minutes.

Local projects on CVCA agenda

Those curious about the latest developments in La Crescenta, Glendale, La Cañada and Sunland/Tujunga are urged to attend meetings of the Crescenta Valley Community Association. The CVCA is an informal gathering of community leaders and residents of the Crescenta Valley who want to talk about and hear of the activities going on locally. Some of the many items to be discussed are the 710 Freeway Connector, the next step in the Foothill Lumber saga, the development of local hiking trails and the possibilities of establishing a community garden. The next meeting is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at the Dunsmore Park Community Room, 4700 Dunsmore Ave.

Tour showcases local water features

Pacific Outdoor Living’s Parade of Ponds takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 30-31. This fundraiser is a self-guided tour highlighting local ponds. Tickets are $20 and good for admission to both the Crescenta Valley and San Gabriel Valley tours. All proceeds benefit nonprofit organizations Five Acres, AIDS Service Center and American Red Cross of San Gabriel/Pomona Valley.

Casa Verdugo site of fundraiser

The Glendale Historical Society is hosting a taste of Old California at Glendale’s historic Casa Verdugo from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 14. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience what it must have been like to wine, dine and party in one of the most celebrated and beautifully situated restaurants in early 20th century California. Sample traditional Spanish dishes that were served at the original restaurant, created by renowned food critic and culinary historian Charles Perry. Tickets are $50 per person for society members; $65 for non-members and are on sale now.

Tickets must be purchased in advance; reservation deadline is June 1.

Retired teachers holding meeting

The Glendale-Foothill Division of the California Retired Teachers’ Association will have its June luncheon meeting on Monday, June 1, at the Elks Lodge. Scholarships will be awarded to students who are pursuing a career in education. The students will be on hand to accept their awards and will present their educational plans. Also on the agenda is the installation of officers for the new year.

Social time begins at 11:30 a.m. and lunch follows at noon. The cost is $12 and reservations can be made by calling (818) 841-1460. Deadline for reservations is Thursday, May 28. All are welcome to attend. The Elks Lodge is located at 120 East Colorado St., Glendale.

GPD Coffee with the COPPS

Community members are invited to meet with local law enforcement at “Coffee with the COPPS” from 8 to 10 a.m. on June 2 at Everest restaurant at 3826 Foothill Blvd.
