The community learned that Johng Hahm, 53, of Montrose had fallen to his death in the Angeles National Forest while hiking near Strawberry Peak. It was surmised that an extreme drop in temperatures, coupled with low visibility conditions, might have left Hahm disoriented.

Twenty Years Ago

Bettie Dobson was honored as Woman of the Year by the Montrose-Verdugo City Chamber of Commerce during a luncheon held at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. Presenting her with an engraved silver plate commemorating the honor was the chamber’s president, Bill Phillips.

Forty-two contestants in the California Beauty Pageant paid a surprise visit to Montrose as part of their tour of the Southland prior to the selection of Miss California. They were led by the reigning title holder, Troas Kaye Hayes.

A festive luau at Chevy Chase Country Club to be held in the summer of 1959 was being planned by the Woodlanders Dance Club.
