Coty Dietel from Troop 317 in Montrose recently earned his Eagle Scout award and will be honored on June 19 in a special court of honor ceremony sponsored by Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Dietel, a graduating senior from La Cañada High School, is the son of Ronald and Susan Dietel of La Cañada.

Dietel began his Scouting career as a Cub Scout in Pack 512 at La Cañada Elementary School where he earned the Arrow of Light award. As a Boy Scout, he earned 25 merit badges, attended dozens of outings and activities including rock climbing, river rafting, and most recently a special overnight program on the U.S.S. Midway aircraft carrier. Attending summer camps at both Camp Kern and Camp Chawanakee in central California, Dietel has served as a patrol leader, assistant patrol leader, instructor and librarian.

For his Eagle Scout project, Dietel led the members of Troop 317 in the development, planning and completion of Operation Whitewash and Operation Shady Seat. For Operation Whitewash, Troop 317 sanded and painted approximately 1,000 feet of outdoor handrails at 12 Oaks Lodge, a non-profit assisted living facility in La Crescenta. For Operation Shady Seat, Dietel and his troop assembled and varnished a new bench for the 55 elderly residents, naming the bench in honor of his grandfather Vernon Dietel a 12 Oaks resident who passed away shortly before the project was completed.

Dietel is a five-year member of the Men’s Ensemble at La Cañada High School, raced in many of the local Kiwanis-sponsored soap box derbies and has completed several UCLA extension classes in early childhood development. He plans to attend Glendale Community College in the fall working toward a degree in early childhood.
