Large billboard to remain

The city of Glendale has reached an agreement with Clear Channel Communications to allow the company to retain one large billboard for five years in exchange for removing 15 smaller signs, several in La Crescenta.

The 40-foot billboard which will remain is located north of the intersection of the Golden State (5) and the Ventura (134) freeways. The city allowed continued use to the previous owner, Patrick Media, when permits expired five years ago in exchange for removal of a previous group of billboards.

Local billboards to be removed are located at 3232 and 3627 Foothill Blvd., and 217 N. Verdugo Blvd. Already removed is a sign at 3464 N. Verdugo Road.

According to Crescenta Valley Chamber of Commerce president Jean Maluccio, the chamber hears more from the community about what’s on the billboards generally than about their placement.

“We get complaints more of content rather than of having a billboard in place,” Maluccio said.

The city had reached an agreement with the Disney Company as part of the contract for the Disney Creative Campus that the billboard be removed. Disney has agreed to the second extension.

The billboards removed are considered among the most egregious in the city, according to a city spokesman.
