La Crescenta Presbyterian Church will present a lecture titled “The Magic Behind Harry Potter” featuring author John Granger from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the church, 2902 Montrose Ave., La Crescenta. Downtown Burbank Free Summer Concert series continues every Thursday in July and August on the AMC Walkway at Palm Avenue and San Fernando Boulevard in Downtown Burbank. Festivities start at 6 p.m. with dance lessons by Francisco and Stacey of the Dance Family Studio, then a two-hour concert begins at 7 p.m. Tonight, Phat Cat Swinger performs music reminiscent of Bobby Darin, Louis Prima and Frank Sinatra mixed with new swing sounds of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Theatre Banshee presents Brendan Behan’s “The Hostage” in preview performances at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Banshee, 3435 W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank. Tickets are $7. The play opens Saturday. Glendale Beautiful will have an Open House from 1 to 3 p.m. every Sunday in July and August at the Casa Adobe de San Rafael, 1330 Dorothy Drive, Glendale. ? The Alex Theatre will screen “Sparrows” to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mary Pickford’s first year in film. The city of Glendale and Glendale Healthy Kids will present “A USO Show” at 5 p.m. at the Doctors’ House Museum in Brand Park, 1601 W. Mountain St., Glendale.

There will be an outside concert filled with song and dance numbers from the 1930s to the ‘80s.

Seating will be on the lawn, so folding chairs and blankets are suggested. Admission is free, but a $5 donation to benefit Glendale Healthy Kids will be accepted. Call (626) 840-3551.

The Sunday Concert Series kicks off with the Sounds of the Supremes and Stone Soul beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Starlight Bowl, 1249 Lockheed View Drive, Burbank.
