Glendale Beautiful plans celebration

Glendale Beautiful, in cooperation with Glendale Parks, Recreation and Community Services, is planning the 60th annual Arbor Day celebration Tuesday at Casa Adobe de San Rafael Park, 1330 Dorothy Drive, Glendale.

During inclement weather, the location will be in the lower level of Glendale Civic Auditorium.

The event will feature a coffee social at 10 a.m., followed by the program at 10:30 a.m.

Glendale Beautiful will be offering residents a chance to pay tribute to a special person by donating a tree in recognition or in memory of that person.

The program will feature third-graders from Balboa Elementary School. Another feature will be the presentation of the Tree City USA award. The 60th annual Arbor Day marks the 26th consecutive year that the city has received the designation.

For more information, or to order a tree, call Arbor Day Chairwoman Gladys Wymore at (818) 246-3634.

Foothill YMCA launches fundraiser

Officials at the YMCA of the Foothills said they hope to raise $450,000 through the annual Community Support Campaign in order to meet increasing financial needs. The fundraiser, currently underway, runs through March 11.

Money generated by the campaign helps to fund YMCA financial assistance, senior service and physical education programs, said Kim Beattie, director of communications and public relations.

Last year, the Community Support Campaign raised $390,000, money that helped 1,200 kids and families, Beattie said.

The demand, however, continues to increase. One in seven members at the YMCA of the Foothills, which has locations in La Cañada and Tujunga, receives some sort of financial assistance, Beattie said.

The YMCA is trying to keep pace with community needs by expanding financial assistance, board member Chris Waldheim said.
