PTA News:

May ushers in testing, including Advanced Placement tests and California Standards Testing, beginning May 18 and continues through May 21. There is a modified schedule each day, varying by grade level, so please check the schedule. Families will receive detailed information in a recorded phone message from Hoover, which will also be on the Hoover website. Please be sure your students are well rested and on time.

Thanks to all who supported a successful Glenwood Road Block Party. The event, a collaboration of Keppel, Toll and Hoover, was a great community celebration of the arts.

Toll Middle School

Join the Toll PTSA as it hosts “A Summer Reading,” fundraising event at 6:30 p.m., May 13 at Barnes and Noble at the Americana. Toll’s music groups and drill team will perform, and students will conduct a book talk. Recommended reading lists will be available to promote summer reading.

The Toll PTSA will have elections for its 2010-2011 Executive Board at 3 p.m. May 27 in the Toll teachers’ cafeteria. The nominated officers are: Raquel Alano-Greicius, Magda Hamalian, Nancy Fetterhoff, Kahlena Funk, Susanna Garamanoukian, Terry Wong, Debbie Miller, Betsy Ames, Becky York and Adrine Novshadyan.

Balboa Elementary

Congratulations to Balboa students who participated in the Elementary School Honors Orchestra; Christopher Astoquillca, Mary Deyell and Raymond Logan. The Staff and Teacher Appreciation Luncheon will be during lunch hour, Wednesday. Thanks Lisa Deyell and Patricia Morgan for planning the fiesta.

The Spring Fling event takes place 4 to 7 p.m. May 14, on the Balboa playground. A grand retirement party will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 19 on the school playground for Balboa retirees — Sharon Capaldi, Linda Milano, Jane McVay, Pat Spencer and Mary Tracy. No fees required and everyone is welcome to attend.

Franklin Elementary

Join the next PTA meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 11 in the auditorium for the installation of the new executive board for 2010-2011. The first first Father-Son Night, with the theme, “Camp Franklin,” will be from 6 to 8 p.m. May 14 in the Franklin Auditorium. Boys and dads are encouraged to don camping gear and enjoy barbecue, outdoor games and win cool prizes. Tickets are $7.50 per person.

The Benjamin Franklin Elementary Foundation invites you to “World Fest,” a multicultural carnival, from noon to 5 p.m. May 22, at Franklin. Climb the Matterhorn, dunk the principal, tackle the obstacle course and enjoy game booths, face painting, live music, food and drinks from around the world. Parent volunteers are still needed; sign up at www.bfefound.org. Pre-sale tickets available at a discount.

Jefferson Elementary

A Jog A Thon fundraiser is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 21, on the school playground. A PTA meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. May 20 in the conference room. There will be a flag ceremony at 8:30 a.m. May 27, for primary students and 10:30 a.m. for upper grades. It will be held in the auditorium. The Teachers Appreciation Luncheon is planned for 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. May 28. Special activities are planned May 24 through 28 to show appreciation for the teachers.

Mark Keppel Elementary

May is a busy month for Mark Keppel, beginning with a Spring Fundraiser of Masterpiece Cookie Dough from April 30 through May 7. Mark Keppel parents plan many surprises for the teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 3 through May 7. May 10 through May 21 is STAR testing for our children and the month ends with Open House at Mark Keppel Elementary.
