New superintendent will be breakfast speaker

The Glendale Educational Foundation is joining with the Glendale Unified School District to present the sixth annual State of the Schools Breakfast at 7 a.m. Oct. 7 at the Edison/Pacific Community Center, 501 S. Pacific Ave., Glendale. Richard Sheehan will be introduced to the community at the breakfast, having taken the helm as the superintendent of Glendale Unified School District on July 1.

Featured speakers include Glendale Educational Foundation member, Mia Lee, State Supt. of Schools Jack O’Connell and School Board Member Greg Krikorian.

The celebratory event will also highlight the Teacher of the Year, Kris Kohlmeier, and a surprise awardee of the Educational Excellence Award.

The Glendale Educational Foundation is celebrating its sixth year of support for the school district, most recently funding the purchase of transponder systems for 30 schools. The emphasis for 2010-11 will be Health and Fitness, Science and Technology and Visual and Performing Arts.

LA CRESCENTA ELEMENTARY

The Foundation is in the midst of its donation drive. Funds raised will help pay for additional computers in the computer lab and supplies in the classrooms.

The annual Book Fair is from Sept. 20 to 24. Students can attend during the day with their classes, and parents can browse at Back to School Night the evening on Sept. 23.

VALLEY VIEW ELEMENTARY

The Foundation Campaign for Excellence runs through Sept. 30.

The Fall Family Picnic is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 on the kindergarten playground.

DUNSMORE ELEMENTARY

PTA President Suzette Lagumby has chosen the theme “PTA = Power To Achieve” and she asks that each family participate in the membership drive this month.

Reflections Chairwoman Deb Parker says this year’s theme is “Together We Can.” Students should start thinking about their entries and more information will be sent home in Thursday Folders.

ROSEMONT MIDDLE

The location of the first dining out event, which runs all day on Sept. 23, is Baja Fresh, 2637 Foothill Blvd. La Crescenta.

Purchase a lunch and/or dinner and a portion of the purchase will be donated back to the PTA. Just mention Rosemont and put the receipt in the collection box.

CRESCENTA VALLEY HIGH

A barbecued dinner will be from 5:45 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the quad hosted by Prom Plus. Tickets are $5. At 6:45, parents are invited to Back to School Night beginning with a general purpose presentation in the quad to discuss school activities, clubs and other opportunities. Starting at 7 p.m. parents and students will be visiting classrooms to become aware of instructor expectations, material covered, homework and grading policies, course textbooks and teacher availability for parent contacts.
