Glendale City Council Meeting Preview

Beeline fares: The City Council on Tuesday will hold a special meeting at 2:30 p.m. to discuss a proposed fare increase and service cuts for the Glendale Beeline bus service.

City transportation commissioners voted 4 to 1 last week to recommend that the City Council raise the regular Beeline one-way fare to 75 cents, while at the same time slashing two routes with low ridership. The fare would be raised to $1 in July 2012.

Under the same recommendation, the one-way fare for the Metrolink express bus from the Glendale Amtrak/Metrolink station to downtown Glendale would be raised to $2.

City officials say the fare increases and service cuts are needed to help balance the city’s transit fund, which relies entirely on property tax revenues set aside for transit operations. Those revenues have remained stagnant as operational costs continue to rise.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The City Council will discuss the proposed changes but will not vote on the matter until next month.

Traffic signal upgrades

The City Council will consider a $2.1-million contract with Baldwin Park-based firm Lincoln Pacific Builders to upgrade 13 traffic signals along Glenoaks Boulevard.

The stimulus-funded project includes installing new signals and upgrading safety lighting at the intersections, among other work.

The four-month construction period is expected to start next month.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The City Council is expected to approve the contract.

Reservoir Backup

The City Council will consider opening bidding for a project to increase reliability at the city’s Diederich Reservoir.

The 57.5-million gallon reservoir has a single outlet pipe that, if it failed, would leave about half of the city’s households temporarily without water. Under the proposed $3.4-million project, crews would build an additional delivery pipeline.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The City Council is expected to approve the project and open the bidding process.
