Shooting victim in stable condition

GLENDALE — Police officials say they plan to step up patrols near the Glendale Amtrak/Metrolink train station after a 49-year-old bus rider was shot three times in an apparent robbery near a bus stop.

The Police Department’s Gang, Special Enforcement Detail and community lead officers will likely saturate the area surrounding the train station in the 400 block of West Cerritos Avenue as they continue to investigate Saturday’s early-morning shooting, Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

The bus rider, who is from San Diego, was shot three times about 6 a.m. at San Fernando Road and Mira Loma Avenue after he exited a Metro bus and was confronted by two gun-wielding men, Lorenz said.

The man, whom police did not identify, had taken a Greyhound bus from San Diego to Los Angeles, and from there, a Metro bus into Glendale to visit family, Lorenz said.

He exited the bus at San Fernando Road and Mira Loma Avenue, a little more than a block away from the train station, and began walking north when he was approached by the thieves, he said.

“The victim comes to Glendale on a regular basis and has never had a problem before,” Lorenz said.

The two men fired three or four shots, hitting the San Diego man three times, but none of the wounds were life-threatening, Lorenz added.

The man then called police and said he had been robbed and shot, Lorenz said. Paramedics arrived and took him to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

The shooters got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and jewelry.

They were described as Latino men between 16 and 20 years old and about 5 feet 8 inches tall, police said.
