Get out and cheer for local football teams

Fall sports are in full swing. Hoover's next home game is Thursday against Burroughs at Glendale High. The junior varsity game is at 4 p.m., and varsity is at 7 p.m. Hoover plays Crescenta Valley Oct. 8 at the same times. The full Hoover game schedule is at Hoover's next PTSA meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 in room 12101.

The Relay for Life, benefiting the American Cancer Society, starts at 9 a.m. Oct. 3 and goes until 9 a.m. Oct. 4 at Scholl Canyon Baseball Field. To join, go to, and join any of the four Hoover Tornadoes teams.

There is an AVID Parent Workshop at 7 a.m. Oct. 14 in the Hoover High Library. And there will be a 24 hour Theatre Festival from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 16 in the auditorium.

The Harlem All Star Event has been postponed until Nov. 6.

Toll Middle School

Thanks to everyone who bought products from Toll students during the Signatures Fund drive. Products will be delivered to students Oct. 14. Parent help is requested. PTA Reflections student entries are due Oct. 20. Keep in mind that Red Ribbon Week is Oct. 25 to 29, reminding students of the dangers of drugs.

Balboa Elementary

Thanks to Lisa Deyell for chairing the first PTA event; Hot September Night. Thanks also to Dawn Velasquez for organizing and teaching the "Poodle Skirt" class for the event. Balboa continues its membership drive under Nono Petrossian's leadership, so please join. The first PTA meeting successfully introduced new principal Lena Richter to Balboa parents.

The gift-wrap fundraiser will soon begin; get your wallets ready. The sixth-grade student store is in full swing and open every Wednesday after school. The next major PTA event is the Pumpkin Patch, to be held Oct. 23 in the kindergarten yard.

Franklin Elementary

Franklin started the year with three Spanish, one German, and one Italian kindergarten class, plus incredibly energetic new parents and teachers. For the first time in Franklin Elementary history, the school has reached 100% PTA membership. They also started the year with the Parents on Patrol program providing supervision at lunch, drop off and pick up; allowing teachers to focus more on students and classes.

Jefferson Elementary

Jefferson's full roster of activities for the year starts with Movie Night from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday on the field. Fall Fundraising gets underway Oct. 4. Please check your child's backpack for fundraising materials. International Walk-To-School Day is Oct. 6.

Jefferson is having an assembly called, "Eastern Magic," from 8:30 a.m. to noonOct. 12 in the auditorium. There will be three showings for the different grades. Fall Festival begins at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 29 on the Jefferson field with food and games and ends at 7:30 p.m. Come in costume and join the fun!

Mark Keppel Elementary

If you haven't bought gift wrap and other goodies yet, there's still time. The last day for the Mark Keppel fundraiser is Friday. The Reflections Art Contest begins Oct. 4.

Keppel's Harvest Festival is from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 22 on Keppel's lower level. Also Red Ribbon week runs Oct. 25 to 29 to remind kids and parents to say no to drugs. The Father/Son Halloween Dinner is from 6:30 to 830 p.m. Oct. 29. Please check the Keppel Kable and school marquee for details.
