Big rig overturns on 210 Fwy. onramp

The drivers of a big rig and Nissan sedan escaped with minor injuries early this morning in a collision on the Foothill (210) Freeway that sent the overturned truck down the embankment for the Oceanview Boulevard onramp.

The collision occurred on the eastbound 210 Freeway near Angeles Crest Highway about 5 a.m. when a 30-year-old Montclair man apparently fell asleep at the wheel, causing his Nissan sedan to veer right into the path of the big rig, California Highway Patrol Officer Ming-Yang Hsu said.

Despite locking its brakes, the big rig hit the car before overturning and crashing down the embankment of the onramp, Hsu said. The car spun out and ended up on the shoulder.

Both drivers were taken to a local hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries – a lucky break “considering what we’re looking at here on the scene,” Hsu said.

Several eastbound lanes were closed briefly, but have since been reopened as crews work to clean up spilled diesel on the dirt embankment. The Oceanview onramp to the eastbound 210 Freeway will likely remain closed for much of the day, Hsu added.
