Foundation scaring up pumpkin patch

R.D. White’s Foundation is in a harvest mood hosting a Pumpkin Patch from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 22 and again from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 23 on the school’s front lawn, 744 E. Doran St. It’s a great chance to buy pumpkins for Halloween carving.

Glendale High School

The College and Career Fair at 5 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Glendale Civic Auditorium will provide high school students with resources from colleges, universities and technical schools represented.

Students Opposed to Starving, also known as the Fall Food Drive, is Nov. 2 to 5. The ASB and PTSA collect dry and canned food for needy families. Times have been tough for area residents with many parents jobless or underemployed. Please be generous.

Wilson Middle School

PTSA Co-Historian Linda Guzik reports that Back to School Night was a success as parents visited classrooms and heard about teacher goals. The PTSA Membership Drive is wrapping up and Chair Dina Calis announced they are 94 members shy of meeting a 663-member goal. There is still time to join! Reflections Chair Chris Antoine reminds students of the Oct. 22 deadline.

Glenoaks Elementary

The PTA Membership Drive is winding down. Chair Asiya Hasan says 175 members are needed to meet their goal and urges parents and the community to join. A portion of the $7 dues helps fund programs at Glenoaks with the rest helping local, state and national units to continue advocating for better public education.

Howdy Night is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 15. Glenoaks’ families can say “howdy” during this fun event featuring “chuck wagon” food by the Jewel City Kiwanis. Howdy Night is PTA-supported and parent participation in membership and fundraising are essential for PTA events to continue.

“This is one activity that students love,” said Event Chair Jaimi Zwerling-Jeffrey. “Even alumni come back for Howdy Night. With continued parent support, the tradition will stay alive for years to come.”

R.D. White Elementary

PTA President Laurel Whitcomb Perlman announces that the next Assn. Meeting is at 7 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium.

“We’ll host district officials to discuss parent/student priorities for school improvements over the next decade,” she said.

There is an after-school family fundraiser from 2 to 6 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Zone, 826 N. Glendale Ave. R.D. White Restaurant Night is Oct. 27 at Islands, 117 W. Broadway. Mention R.D. White and 15% of your restaurant tab will be donated.

Verdugo Woodlands Elementary

Principal Janet Buhl congratulates students, teachers and parents for climbing “API mountain” by increasing the schoolwide score to 921 said Madelaine Motallebi, publicity liaison. The PTA Arts, Education and Technology Committee begins a K-2 Music Program Friday when students enjoy a multicultural, multifaceted musical experience. This program is supported through fundraising, and taught by parents Deb Beyer and Christine Griswold.

Dine between 5 to 10 p.m. Oct. 20 at Joselito’s Mexican Restaurant, 2345 Honolulu Ave., and mention Verdugo Woodlands to have 15% of eat-in or take-out order costs donated.
