David Vincent “Vinnie” Howarth
Born February 28, 1918 in Bloomfield, New Jersey. In the mid 1920s, Vinnie arrived in Glendale, CA with parents, David & Sadie Howarth. At 17, before his 1937 Glendale HS graduation, he met his lifelong love, Barbara Ann Turner, who shared his February 28th birthday. After a 7 year courtship, they began a 62 1/2 year marriage on August 20, 1942.
Vinnie served in the Army Air Corps. 1942 - 1946, in Altus, OK and Anchorage, AK. Daughter Barbara “Bobbie” was born in 1944. In Mecca, CA from 1949 - 1953, Vinnie was the owner of Desert Service Appliance Repair in Indio, while commercially farming cantaloupes, grapes and yams under the “BarVinBar” and “D.V Howarth Ranch” lug box labels. He was a member of the Coachella Valley 20/30 club, dressing up as a Sheik, with his “date” and “offshoot” for the annual Riverside County Date Festival.
A return to Glendale was made for the 1954 birth of son, David “Randy”. The family moved into and remained in their newly built La Crescenta home on 1/1/1956. He became a member of the La Crescenta Masonic Lodge.
He started as sole owner and employee of Accurate Dial and Nameplate, Inc. in 1959. What was supposed to be a temporary business is now a well respected Glendale manufacturing firm in its 51st year. The only contract he ever broke, by passing away December 16, 2010, from chronic leukemia and a fall induced stroke, was his contract with Accurate Dial, which had him committed until age 99, when he would then retire in 2017.
Barbara and Vin were very active officers and members of the Glendale-Hoover Alumni Association, hosting many parties in their home and co-coordinating events, trips, correspondence and the newsletter. They were members of American Field Service, hosting foreign exchange students for a year and temporary stays. Vinnie enjoyed the meetings and activities of the Pasadena Casting Club.
Vinnie had life long friends of all ages from all over the country, whom he treasured and cared for very much. Once his friend, always his friend. All were always welcome in the Howarth home and family circle.
To cherish the memories of his life well lived are: Bobbie, husband Tom Featherston, grandson Grant and wife Shannon Featherston, great-grandson Drew, Randy and wife Barbara Howarth, granddaughter Tara Howarth.
