Americana expansion hearing postponed

Hoping to see private property owners agree on a controversial development plan, the Glendale Redevelopment Agency on Tuesday rescheduled to March 1 a meeting on the proposal to expand the Americana at Brand mall to two neighboring properties.

On Monday, Rick Caruso, developer of the 15.5-acre mall, and Ray Patel, owner of the neighboring Golden Key Hotel, requested that the Redevelopment Agency meeting on the expansion proposal be delayed. It is the second weeklong delay the two have sought as Caruso tries to work out a deal to acquire Patel’s property.

In November, Caruso proposed acquiring the hotel and a neighboring site to add 135,000 square feet of retail to his mixed-use development. The owner of a vacant property next to the Americana agreed to sell in December, but Patel refused Caruso’s $6-million buyout offer.

He accused Caruso and the city, which has the power to condemn Patel’s hotel for redevelopment purposes, of teaming up to deny him his property rights. Patel also has a lawsuit pending against the city and Caruso Affiliated, alleging that construction of the mall between 2005 and 2008 undermined his business.
