Harry Jean Beckman
Harry Jean Beckman, age 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle passed away on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at his home in Glendale. He was a resident of Glendale for 47 years.
Harry was born July 2, 1922 on the family farm in Kirk, Colorado, son of Harry Walter Beckman and Ida Alice Bailey Beckman. He grew up in Brush, Colorado where he was a high school basketball and track star. He and his family moved to Pasadena, California in 1940.
He attended Pasadena City College before he joined the Navy. He served his country for four years. During World War II he served on an aircraft carrier moving throughout the Asiatic-South Pacific area.
After the War, he continued his eduation at USC learning about a new science called computer science. He was employed as a systems analyst and systems manager with the Southern California Gas Co. for 42 years. On August 15, 1964 he married Sherry Lee Ferrin. They have lived in North Glendale for 47 years. They have one daughter, Julie Ann.
Harry was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In the Glendale Stake he served as Executive Secretary and Stake Sunday School President. In the Glendale Third Ward he served as Ward Secretary and Sunday School Superintendent and in many other capacities. Harry was President of the University Park Kiwanis Club for many years and he was President of the Gas Company Retirees Club for many years. He was also an avid golfer thoughout his life.
Harry is survived by his wife Sherry Beckman, daughter Julie Ann Haltom, grandson Jesse Haltom, niece Mary Swafford and nephew Robert Beckman.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at the Little Church of the Flowers at Forest Lawn, Glendale, California. Viewing will be at Forest Lawn on Friday, March 4th from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks & Mortuaries
