Man arrested after noise dispute leads to shots

GLENDALE — Prosecutors have charged a 60-year-old Glendale man with trying to shoot and kill a neighbor over a noise dispute, officials said.

Douglas McCreery allegedly fired a couple of rounds during the confrontation. His 33-year-old neighbor, Jared Kurt, was not injured, according to Glendale police reports.

Prosecutors charged McCreery with one felony count of attempted murder. He also faces an additional allegation of personally and intentionally discharging a firearm, according to a Los Angeles County Superior Court complaint.

The pair had been living next door to each for less than a year. McCreery had complained to the police in the past that Kurt was playing loud music and talking loudly, police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said in an e-mail.

“[The] victim always tried to be apologetic,” Lorenz said of Kurt’s response to past noise complaints.

McCreery was arrested Thursday at his apartment on the 1100 block of North Louise Street following reports of gunfire, according to police reports.

McCreery allegedly grew tired of the noise, so he went to Kurt’s apartment and banged on the door.

When Kurt opened the door, police said McCreery pointed his gun at him.

Kurt yelled at McCreery to stop pointing the gun at his face and slammed the door shut, police said.

He then fled to his kitchen, heard gunfire and called police.

Officers arrived to the apartment, surrounded the area and took McCreery into custody at his apartment. Police also recovered the handgun and an assault rifle with ammunition.

Police later discovered two gunshot holes in Kurt’s front door.

Prosecutors have requested that McCreery’s bail be set at $1.2 million. He’s expected to be arraigned later this week and is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.
