Gordon Lewis Roberts II

Gordon Lewis Roberts II, 85, passed away peacefully just after receiving holy communion, on Wednesday March 2, 2011. Gordon was born in Poultney, VT in September 1925, the youngest child of five to Catherine and Gordon L. Roberts.

Gordon proudly served in the Navy during World War II, as a Gunners Mate. After the war, he Graduated from the University of Vermont in Burlington. Gordon married Elenore Hunziker on January 31, 1948 in New York. Elenore, the love of his life, passed away in 2000, after 52 years of marriage.

In 1986, after over 35 years working for Milliken and Company in sales management, Gordon and Elenore retired to a home on the San Vincent golf course in Ramona, CA. Gordon and Ellie enjoyed playing golf as part of the “Guys and Dolls” group, while living in La Canada, CA and then the “Dirty Dozen” in Ramona, CA.

In 2008 he moved into the Palms in San Luis Obispo, CA to be closer to his daughter Rudianne Roberts and two of his four sons, Brian (Jeri) Roberts, MD and Matthew (Terry) Roberts. Gordon (Lisbeth) Roberts III lives overseas in Denmark and Peter (Pamela) Roberts lives in Washington State.

Gordon was preceded in death by three of his four older sisters, Lorraine Nardo, Ester Yates and Allana Roberts. Barbara Williams survives him and lives in Queensbury, NY. Gordon dearly loved his 6 granddaughters, Marie, Maja, Mette, Shawna, Jillian, Isabel and his 3 great grandchildren Frida, August and Viggo.

Gordon was active in the Knights of Columbus for many years, originally on the East Coast and more recently with council 9133 in Ramona and council 1271 in San Luis Obispo. Since moving to San Luis Obispo, he has been a devout parishioner of Nativity of Our Lady Catholic church.

Gordon Roberts has been, above all else, a spectacular mentor over the years. He had the purest of teaching styles - by example. He taught us ethics by demonstrating the highest moral principles. We learned about perseverance by watching his resolve despite the challenges. Compassion required action, not just a kind thought. He stood unyielding behind his commitments. True love was revealed through his simple truths of life, exhibited everyday.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the “special fund” at Nativity of Our Lady, 221 Daly St., San Luis Obispo, CA 93405, or Hospice Partners of the Central Coast, 277 South St. Ste. R, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401. At Gordon’s request, there will be a funeral mass on April 15, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church. No other public memorial services are to be scheduled.
