Second suspect arrested in car theft

GLENDALE — A second Glendale teen was arrested in connection with a car theft on Tuesday in South Glendale, where police searched for more than two hours for the pair, officials said.

Andrew Martinez, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon at his South Glendale home on suspicion of stealing a car idling on a driveway, police said. He remained jailed in lieu of $35,000 bail as of late Wednesday, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s reports.

Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said detectives were still investigating whether Martinez has committed other burglaries in the area.

Police initially detained a 16-year-old boy who had been seen exiting a nearby gas station bathroom during a search for the suspects.

Detectives indentified the boy as a passenger in the stolen car, Lorenz said. He was later released to his parents.

The theft occurred Tuesday morning on the 600 block of Raleigh Street, where a woman left her idling car in a driveway, police said.

The woman saw the pair drive off in her car and immediately notified police.

The pair stopped near Los Feliz Road and Brand Boulevard after a brief police chase and ran into the neighborhood, prompting officers to set up a perimeter and deploy a helicopter and police dogs to assist in the search.

Martinez is scheduled to be arraigned today in the Los Angeles County Superior Court in Glendale.
