Bomb squad called out to device

A Los Angeles County bomb squad on Friday destroyed what appeared to be a makeshift bomb in the form of a hand grenade after briefly evacuating the area in which it was found in the Central Glendale, police said.

The mock grenade was found in the back yard of a residence on the 700 block of Acacia Avenue and called in about 5:40 p.m.

The caller described a rusty grenade with the pin still intact, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

Police closed down and evacuated the area to allow the county bomb squad to investigate the device, which they detonated about 7:40 p.m., Lorenz said.

In a post-detonation examination, authorities determined that the device was not a grenade, but was instead a improvised explosive made to look like a hand grenade.

The device was far less powerful than a hand grenade, Lorenz said.

“It would not have done the damage a grenade would have done,” he said.

No one was injured in the incident and the area soon was restored to regular activity.
