Woman shot to death on 210 Freeway

A Glendale man who allegedly shot a woman to death Friday evening and pushed her body out of his car off the 210 Freeway in La Crescenta remained in surgery after apparently shooting himself, officials said.

The identities of the man and the woman were not immediately available.

Authorities closed the La Crescenta Avenue off-ramp from the westbound 210 Freeway where the body was dumped from a black Honda shortly after 5 p.m., when police started fielding 911 calls from witnesses.

“There is a possibility that a witness saw some type of scuffle inside the vehicle as they were approaching La Crescenta [Avenue],” said L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Mike Rosson.

Glendale police officers were the first responders at the scene, where they discovered a body on the side of the off-ramp.

“They ultimately responded to the La Crescenta offramp where they found one female who had suffered at least one gunshot wound,” Rosson said.

The man who allegedly shot and then pushed the body out of the car was stopped a short time later by Glendale police on the southbound Glendale (2) Freeway near the Mountain Avenue offramp. He sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper torso, Rosson said.

The man was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital and remained in surgery Friday night. His condition was not available.

Glendale police turned the investigation over to the Sheriff’s Department since the shooting occurred within the county’s jurisdiction, Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

The woman’s body was covered with a white sheet by the side of the road for several hours as county coroners officials investigated the scene.

At least one lane of the westbound 210 Freeway was closed for hours as investigators interviewed motorists who had pulled over after witnessing the shooting.

“There was a vehicle that tried to pin in the suspect vehicle,” Rosson said. “The suspect brandished a firearm. Obviously the good Samaritan backed off.”
