Glendale High School academics and leadership shine at the 46th annual Pat Navolanic Memorial Award assembly June 1 spotlighting 2011 finalists Jeff Asano, Justin Belen, Alan Ghazarians, Ani Ghazikhanian and Ji Su Yoo.

Glendale High student Pat Navolanic passed away at the age of 20, but not before leaving a trail of accomplishments. Today, the memorial award has become the most prestigious honor bestowed on a Glendale High senior and encourages a higher level of achievement in leadership, academics, community service and athletics. The school’s goal is that this award will stimulate students to emulate the qualities of character that made Pat Navolanic such an outstanding student and leader.

An open invitation to the community is extended by Janet Buhl, Verdugo Woodlands principal, for her school’s annual Open House of kindergarten through sixth-grade classrooms from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 26. Everyone is welcome — from family, friends and neighbors to incoming families or those considering Verdugo Woodlands but currently attending private schools. Each classroom will have displays of the projects that its students have completed. Early Extended Education Learning Programs Open House is from 6 to 6:30 p.m.

PTSA President Sydney Swainston reports that several Glendale High PTSA officers and members attended the recent California State PTA Convention in Long Beach where they learned tips on how to better execute their PTA offices and heard about new programs on the horizon. Swainston adds that this was an opportunity for them to network with more than 3,000 PTA members from across the state and nation, which equips the Glendale High PTSA to support the education, welfare and safety of our children. A Spring Choir Concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 24 in the auditorium, followed by an Instrumental Music Concert at 7 p.m. May 26 also in the auditorium.

Wilson Middle School

Wilson’s PTSA held its installation dinner Tuesday at La Cabanita Restaurant where outgoing President Hilda Hovsepian thanked the 2010-11 Executive Board for their service and volunteer efforts and welcomed the 2011-12 Executive Board: First Vice President Jennifer Palacios; Second Vice President Silva Antanessian; Third Vice President Adrineh Vartani; Treasurer Armineh Satori; Auditor Marcie Lumpkin; Recording Secretary Nada Saghi; and Co-Historians Pat Erstad and Linda Guzik. The office of president is still vacant. An Instrumental Spring Concert is taking place from 6 to 8 p.m. May 25 in the auditorium, and a Choral Pops Concert entertains from 6 to 8 p.m. May 31 also in the auditorium.

Mark your calendars for Mother-Son Night, says Publicity Liaison Madelaine Motallebi. The evening is from 6 to 9 p.m. May 21 at the Dads Club. Anton Salaks and Michael Gonzalez, event co-chairmen, are organizing this fun night out.

May 23 is Career Day at Verdugo Woodlands. Sherilynne Di Paolo, chairwoman, has been very busy scheduling an interesting lineup of speakers. Sixth-graders will hear Verdugo Woodlands parents and community members speak about their professions to gain insight on career options available today.
