Dispute involves gun, machete

GLENDALE — A father-son argument over bad smells in the kitchen led to one threatening to use his machete, and the other responding by retrieving his handgun, police said.

The 30-year-old son, Areg Girag, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly swung the machete at his father. He was released that morning after posting bail, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records.

No major injuries were reported in the early-morning incident, Glendale Police Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

Girag’s father had been watching TV about 12:30 a.m. in his home in the 300 block West Windsor Road when he smelled a foul odor coming from the kitchen where his daughter was cooking, according to police reports.

He opened the kitchen door to ventilate the room, but his daughter quickly slammed it shut. When he reopened the door and she shut it again, he began yelling, according to police.

An argument between the father and daughter ensued and at some point, he removed the door from its hinges.

Girag told police he was afraid his father was going to hurt his sister, so he tried to defend her.

A shoving match ensued that caused both men to fall to the ground, according to police.

Girag allegedly ran into his bedroom and grabbed a machete, which he swung two feet away from his father.

His father, in turn, retrieved a loaded 9mm handgun from his bedroom and pointed it at Girag, who was still holding the machete, according to police reports.

Girag retreated into his bedroom, where he allegedly left the machete in the bedroom and exited the home.

Police said a neighbor called police after hearing a man and woman screaming.

Girag’s father told officers that he didn’t want his son to be arrested, but “was not going to be a willing victim,” according to reports.
