Unemployment drops slightly in Burbank, Glendale

The job market improved slightly in Burbank and Glendale in April, outpacing even more modest gains in the region and state.

Unemployment in Burbank fell from 9.9% in March to 9.6% in April, according to the California Employment Development Department. In Glendale, the rate dropped from 10.6% in March to 10.3%.

Statewide, unemployment ticked down from 12% to 11.9%, as employers added only 13,100 net nonfarm jobs in the month. In Los Angeles County, the unemployment rate slipped from 12.3% in March to 12.1% in April, according to the state.

Hotels and restaurants accounted for much of the gain statewide, while sectors losing ground in April include government, financial and business services.

The television and movie industry was essentially flat in April at 136,100 jobs statewide, but has gained 17.8% since April 2010, according to the Employment Development Department.

Retail grew by 0.3% over the same period, with the industry now employing more than 382,000 Californians.

In La Cañada Flintridge, the unemployment rate dipped from 4.7% in March to 4.6% in April.

In La Crescenta, the figure fell from 6% to 5.8%.
