Obituary: Nicole Battles

Nicole Battles of La Crescenta died May 26. She was 53.

Battles was described by colleagues as the epitome of an AYSO volunteer in Glendale and La Crescenta. Her work included managing, coordinating, coaching or refereeing and acting as a role model for the kids playing soccer.

Battles joined the AYSO Region 88 Board of Directors in 2004 as trophy coordinator. In the following years she served as assistant registrar, assistant treasurer, child and volunteer protection advocate and spring-season coordinator. Over the last 10 years Nicole coached many different girls’ soccer teams, including regular-season teams, all-star teams, spring-season teams and tournament teams.

Her colleagues noted that

she would often work late into the night, or all weekend, to accomplish an AYSO project.

As a coach, she was also remembered for her ability to remember every player and what positions they played best on the field.
